There's plenty of ways Tasmania could be a world leader. Green energy from Wind or Solar would be a good start. Nichols Chicken has shown all businesses the right path, with their wind powered factory. It may not be 100% wind power but it's a good start, and with 1 more wind turbine it could be making money from the extra power.
I hope everyone who owns their home took advantage of the solar rebates while they were available. If each house had 5 metres of solar panels and a battery backup built in, and setup to run back to the grid any excess power, you would not need to pay a power bill, and we would only need minimal power production for night time.
As for vehicles I think electric plug in cars are good for short trips, but for longer travel we need Hydrogen Fuel Cell cars like the one Honda made. James May drove it on Top Gear in the states. Before that can happen though, we need more renewable power to make the Hydrogen so it's Zero Impact to the environment. Till then vehicles like the Electron and the EV Capri are showing us the right direction. If car manufacturers don't smarten up their act soon, I think most people will just make their own, or pay someone to do it for them. I like my 6 cylinder Falcon, but Direct Torque Electric would be so much better, and a lot less in fuel. I think then I might enjoy driving again, instead of just counting the costs.
